Tony has only just landed on the cobbles and is already causing trouble for the residents of Weatherfield, but fans of the show may recognise his face from two previous soaps

Tony from Coronation Street, who appeared on the ITV cobbles last month, is already wreaking havoc among Weatherfield’s residents.

Tony, portrayed by Sean Cernow, was formerly a plumber who gained notoriety by sleeping with Ed Bailey, a friend. He will now play a more darker role in this week’s episodes when Tony threatens Ed for not paying Tony a loan.

Only when Ed is spotted gleefully spending the cash with the family around Christmas does Tony’s frustration reach a breaking point. Ed may have discovered Tony’s spiteful side, but will he be able to escape Weatherfield without getting hurt?

Things are only set to spiral further as the pair go from friends to enemies sharpish, as Tony tightens his grip on Ed in the run-up on an important episode on Christmas Day. But as Tony begins to cause trouble on the cobbles, fans of the show may have recognised his face before.

Oldham native Cernow has had a very successful career lately, starring in some of the largest TV shows. 46-year-old Sean has already established himself as a household figure by starring in multiple popular television shows, including HBO’s Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon, Netflix’s breakthrough series The Witcher, and the BBC’s most recent production of Great Expectations.

In addition, since Sean had previously secured two smaller roles on the ITV soap opera, watchful eyes may have noticed him more than once on the streets. In 2008, he made his debut in the Manchester-based soap opera as an anonymous drug dealer.

He came back to the show ten years later to take on a new role. Sean adopted the persona of Phil Warriner, a villain who terrorised the lives of Kate Connor and Rana Habeeb, a lesbian couple.

However, viewers of other soap operas may have seen Sean elsewhere besides Corrie. He also made an appearance in Emmerdale in 2021, where he played Karl Matthewson, a drug dealer and troublemaker.

Sean expressed his excitement about being a part of a new key narrative element for the serial opera while speaking about winning his biggest role to date. There may be more turns ahead for Tony and Ed, he revealed in an interview with the Manchester Evening News.

“I hope people are really going to like Tony, he’s dead sweet and lovely,” he said. “He has a past though and is an old friend of Ed’s.
